IOTDIR
Summary
The IOTDIR directorate meeting began with a logistical note about the absence of a chat function in MeetEcho, which the chairs will address. A key reminder was given to directorate members regarding their role in reviewing IoT-related drafts, emphasizing the focus on IoT aspects rather than requiring deep expertise in specific draft topics. Updates were provided by numerous IETF working groups (6lo, ANIMA, SDF, COSE, CORE, LWIG, RAW, SCHC, SCIM, SWEET) and IRTF research groups (THINGS), covering document progress, upcoming meetings, re-chartering efforts, and technical challenges like the use of Yang for data modeling. The meeting also highlighted upcoming IETF activities, including a side meeting on Enterprise Networks and a THINGS RG security workshop.
Key Discussion Points
- IOTDIR Reviewer Role: A reminder was issued to directorate members that their reviews should focus on the IoT-related aspects of a document, as their expertise lies in IoT. Reviewers are not expected to be domain experts on every specific topic within a draft.
- ANIMA Yang/CDDL Discussion: The ANIMA working group noted difficulties in using Yang for modeling digital artifacts (specifically the voucher data model) due to a lack of industry tools for automatic conversion to JSON or CBOR. The working group will discuss whether to rewrite the draft to use CDDL as the specification language instead.
- SDF Re-chartering: With its current charter completed, the SDF working group is planning discussions on re-chartering, including a dedicated interim meeting in April.
- COSE CBOR Tutorial: The COSE working group will dedicate the first 30 minutes of its Brisbane session to a tutorial on tools and mechanisms for using CBOR in documents, inviting interested parties.
- CORE Discovery Implications: The CORE working group highlighted an ongoing discussion in its mailing list, and in HTTPBis, regarding link-local names and their potential implications for discovery mechanisms for constrained devices, such as the use of mDNS for CoAP discovery.
- LWIG Orphan Document: The terminology for constrained node networks (7228bis work), an orphan document from the now-closed LWIG, has a new draft that could be shipped but faces Data Tracker issues due to the WG's closure. There is a proposal to discuss its placement within the IOTOPS working group.
- RATS Independent Submission: An independent submission for an ARMS architecture as a RATS extension is open for reviews.
- Enterprise Networks Side Meeting: A side meeting is planned for Thursday morning in Brisbane focusing on the challenges enterprises face in integrating Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) spaces, and how these relate to IoT usage in large-scale deployments (e.g., campuses, manufacturing).
- THINGS RG IoT Security Workshop: The THINGS research group will host a physical interim meeting on IoT security topics in Paris on May 21-22, co-located with a lightweight IoT security hackathon. Remote participation will be possible, and registration is open.
- IETF Engagement with External Research: Christian introduced a COST action research initiative on Next Generation Networks and their security, where IETF experience is being contributed to avoid reinvention.
Decisions and Action Items
- The chair will contact the Secretariat to request the creation of a chat function for IOTDIR MeetEcho meetings for future sessions.
- IOTDIR reviewers are reminded to focus their reviews on the IoT-related aspects of documents.
- The orphan document 7228bis (terminology for constraint node networks) will be discussed for potential adoption or placement within the IOTOPS working group.
- An invitation will be extended to the chairs of the SCIM working group to attend future IOTDIR meetings, and SCIM will be added to the regular WG/RG update template.
- The RAW working group is seeking reviewers for the "Enrollment Priority" draft.
- Tomas will provide further details and a link for the "Enterprise Networks" side meeting planned for Thursday in Brisbane.
- Christian will post a link to the COST action research initiative on Next Generation Networks and their security in the meeting notes.
Next Steps
- Continued progress on various working group documents, with several approaching publication or further stages of review.
- SDF working group to pursue re-chartering discussions.
- ANIMA working group to hold discussions on the potential shift from Yang to CDDL for data modeling.
- Regular interim meetings for CORE, RAW, and SCHC working groups will resume.
- The IOTDIR directorate will continue to monitor and report on IoT-related activities across the IETF and IRTF, and potentially integrate updates from other relevant SDOs.
