PPM

Summary

The PPM Working Group met to discuss the future of Heavy Hitters support within the Distributed Aggregation Protocol (DAP) specification and to receive an update on the Private Inexpensive Norm Enforcement (Pine) VAF. A primary outcome was a preliminary agreement, subject to a formal call for consensus on the mailing list, to simplify the core DAP draft by removing explicit multi-round aggregation and Heavy Hitters support. Instead, Heavy Hitters will be pursued in separate, specialized drafts within PPM. The Pine VAF, designed for Federated Machine Learning, was presented as a promising new use case for DAP, but its adoption will require further discussion with the IETF's CFRG Working Group and Area Director concerning charter alignment. A brief discussion also took place regarding a proposed PPM logo.

Key Discussion Points

Decisions and Action Items

Decision (Proposed - Subject to Mailing List Consensus Call):

Action Items:

  1. Tim Cappalli & Chris Patton: Draft a proposal for the PPM mailing list summarizing the discussion regarding Heavy Hitters. This proposal will detail the proposed simplification of the core DAP draft (by removing multi-round and Heavy Hitter support) and outline the approach for pursuing Heavy Hitters in separate, specialized drafts (likely based on Proposal 2).
  2. Chairs (Sam and Benjamin): Initiate a discussion with the Area Director (Deb) regarding the PPM working group's interest in adopting the Pine VAF and how its cryptographic aspects align with the current charter's stipulation for CFRG to define cryptographic algorithms.
  3. Junwei H: Engage with the PPM mailing list to gather interest and feedback on the Pine VAF, considering the ongoing discussion about charter alignment.
