CELLAR
Summary
The CELLAR Working Group meeting focused primarily on the status of the matroska document in AUTH48, outlining the process for its next steps including a new Working Group Last Call. Updates on ffv1 version 4 and other documents were discussed, with pending GitHub pull requests and plans for new draft uploads. The group also discussed the potential future of the working group and a long-standing offer to assist IANA with generating initial registry entries for matroska.
Key Discussion Points
- Matroska AUTH48 Status: The
matroskadocument is in AUTH48. The latest XML file incorporating IANA-suggested changes for enum fields (requiring numerous IANA Registries) has been sent to the RPC. Orie (AD) noted that this is his first time navigating a complex AUTH48 process and apologized for the need for further review after such a long process. - Matroska Last Call Process: To ensure broad agreement on the changes made during AUTH48, the AD proposed a new Working Group Last Call. The preferred approach is to wait for the RPC to process the current XML, then upload that exact version as a new draft to the data tracker, and then initiate a WG Last Call on this new draft.
- Expired Documents: Several CELLAR documents have recently expired. Updates are ready for some, including additional text, cleaning, and a potential new codec for
chapter-codec, leveraging Google Summer of Code contributions. GitHub pull requests are pending review. - FFV1 Version 4: Work is progressing on
ffv1 version 4. A summary of open issues and ideas will be reposted to the mailing list to stimulate discussion. A pull request for a version bump has been sent, with plans to upload a new XML draft to the data tracker once merged. - WG Future Discussion: A discussion point was raised about whether the working group should close once its current deliverables are complete, or if there are new areas to focus on. Previous discussions this spring indicated a possibility of closing without
ffv1 V4, butchapters,chapter-codecs, andcontrolare expected to advance. This remains a topic for future discussion. - IANA Registry Helper File: The idea of providing IANA with an XML file containing initial
matroskaregistry entries (especially for large tables) to prevent manual errors was revisited. This file was generated previously but never sent.
Decisions and Action Items
- Decision (Matroska AUTH48): The working group will wait for the RPC to process the latest
matroskaXML file. Once processed, the exact output will be uploaded as a new draft version to the data tracker, followed by a 2-week Working Group Last Call. - Action Item (Dave): Repost a summary of open issues and ideas related to
ffv1 version 4to the CELLAR mailing list. - Action Item (FFV1 Contributor): After the
ffv1GitHub pull request for the version bump is merged and released, coordinate the upload of the new XML draft to the data tracker. - Action Item (Matroska Contributor): In the
matroskaAUTH48 email thread, inquire with IANA if they would like to receive an XML file containing the initial registry entries to assist with their process and avoid manual data entry. If affirmative, finalize and provide the file.
Next Steps
- Monitor the
matroskaAUTH48 process and proceed with uploading the new draft and initiating the Working Group Last Call as decided. - Continue with the
ffv1version update and draft upload. - Review and merge pending GitHub pull requests for other documents (
chapter-codec, etc.) and upload new drafts. - Schedule a future discussion to address the long-term outlook of the CELLAR WG, including potential closure or new charter items.
