**Session Date/Time:** 22 Oct 2025 13:00 # [ROLL](../wg/roll.html) ## Summary The ROLL Working Group met to discuss the status of active drafts and progress on key work items. Updates were provided on drafts in various stages of the IETF process. Significant progress was reported on the `nnca-extension` draft, which underwent a major architectural change and will be renamed "Common Ancestor Policy." The `dis-modification` draft, a merger of two earlier documents, also saw updates, including confirmation of an existing implementation. The Working Group Last Call for `enrollment-priorities` remains open, with calls for further reviews. The future of `mopex` and `capabilities` drafts was questioned due to a perceived lack of current interest. ## Key Discussion Points * **Draft Status Overview**: * `all-ripple` is close to being released as an RFC. * `dow-projection` is in the RFC editorial queue. * `nfbd` has been published as an RFC; congratulations were extended to Conrad. * `nnca-extension` and `dis-modification` are in progress, with new versions pending submission. * `enrollment-priorities` is in Working Group Last Call (WGLC). * `mopex` and `capabilities` are awaiting attention/discussion. * **`draft-ietf-roll-enrollment-priorities` (Enrollment Priority)**: * The WGLC, opened in July, is still ongoing. Feedback from working group members (excluding authors) is needed to close it. * Chairs have contacted individuals for review and are awaiting their feedback, hoping for replies by the end of the month. * No known implementations by the authors were reported. * IPR statements have been received from four of five authors; one is still pending. * **`draft-ietf-roll-nnca-extension` (NNCA Extension / Common Ancestor Policy)**: * Aris presented significant changes addressing two open issues: managing alternative parent candidates and interaction with RFC6550 (MRHOF). * The draft now removes all normative references to MRHOF, keeping it as an informational reference for examples. * The title has changed to "Common Ancestor Policy." It is now defined as a policy, orthogonal to specific objective functions, rather than an objective function itself. This simplifies its interaction with existing functionality (e.g., MRHOF's hysteresis). * The requirement for an IANA OCP has been removed as it no longer defines an objective function. * The updated version is available on GitHub and will be submitted after the November 1st cutoff. * An older implementation exists on Contiki, and parts for a newer Contiki version have been implemented by a colleague. * **`draft-ietf-roll-dis-modification` (DIS Modifications)**: * Georgios confirmed the merging of two related drafts into a single document, as agreed upon five years prior. * The merged draft is available on GitHub and will be submitted after the November 1st cutoff. * An implementation exists on Contiki OS, and results showing gains in reduced control traffic (e.g., DIO packet responses to DIS requests) have been published in a paper, linked within the draft. * Pascal expressed strong support for publishing this draft, noting its utility in improving existing RPL functionality. * **`draft-ietf-roll-mopex` and `draft-ietf-roll-capabilities`**: * Pascal raised concerns about the lack of energy and current interest in these drafts, particularly as they were envisioned for RPLv2, for which there is currently no active work or participants in the group. He suggested they might only be needed if the ROLL WG reopens for significant RPL extensions in the future. ## Decisions and Action Items * **`draft-ietf-roll-nnca-extension` (Common Ancestor Policy)**: * **Decision**: The updated draft, reflecting the policy-based approach and renamed "Common Ancestor Policy," will be submitted by Aris after November 1st. * **Action Item**: Aris to provide a diff of the changes for easier review. * **Action Item**: WG members are encouraged to review the updated draft, with Pascal specifically agreeing to review the changes once published. * **Action Item**: Aris to investigate the completeness of the existing implementation for the updated draft. * **`draft-ietf-roll-dis-modification`**: * **Decision**: The merged draft will be submitted by Georgios after November 1st. * **Action Item**: Georgios to include detailed information about the Contiki OS implementation and results, possibly in an appendix, and ensure the link to the published paper is clearly present. * **`draft-ietf-roll-enrollment-priorities`**: * **Action Item**: Chairs to continue actively soliciting feedback from designated reviewers and relevant directorates. * **Action Item**: WG members are strongly encouraged to provide their reviews and indicate support for publication. * **Action Item**: Chairs to follow up with the remaining author for their IPR statement. * **`draft-ietf-roll-mopex` and `draft-ietf-roll-capabilities`**: * **Action Item**: Chairs will follow up with an email to the WG to gather formal feedback and gauge interest in these drafts. ## Next Steps * Authors of `nnca-extension` (Common Ancestor Policy) and `dis-modification` to submit their updated drafts once the submission window opens after November 1st. * WG members to review `enrollment-priorities` and `nnca-extension` (Common Ancestor Policy). * Chairs to continue to facilitate reviews for `enrollment-priorities` and address outstanding IPR. * Chairs to initiate discussions on the mailing list regarding the future status of `mopex` and `capabilities`.
