DNSSD
Summary
The DNSSD working group held an interim meeting to discuss the status of active drafts, including conflict resolution, infrastructure support, and service registration removal. Key updates were provided on implementation experiences for the advertising proxy and progress on the draft-ietf-dnssd-tsr document. Plans for a charter update and upcoming document adoptions were also outlined.
Key Discussion Points
Working Group Status and TSR
- Slide Presentation: Chair slides
- Chris Box opened the meeting and reviewed the current document status, noting that draft-ietf-dnssd-tsr (TSR) was the focus of the previous interim.
- Ted Lemon provided an update on his implementation of the advertising proxy. He noted that while speculative ideas—such as using subdomains of
.localfor conflict resolution—seemed useful, implementation showed that mDNS clients do not handle them well. Consequently, the document will be updated to reflect these findings. - Esko Dijk suggested decoupling the TSR draft from the advertising proxy draft by making the latter an informative reference, allowing the TSR option to be used by other proxy types.
- Tim Wicinski encouraged the authors to publish new draft versions to the datatracker so the working group can review diffs.
- Ted Lemon and Esko Dijk discussed the current state of pull requests (PRs) for TSR. Esko Dijk noted a bug in the document template's SVG labeling that is causing remote build failures, though local builds work.
- The sense of those present was to continue the current process: authors merge PRs and publish new revisions for the working group to review via diffs.
Infrastructure (draft-tlk-dnssd-infrastructure)
- Ted Lemon reported that a new version of the infrastructure document is pending. His previous co-author has left the field, and he is working with new potential co-authors, including Esko Dijk and a developer from Apple.
- Ted Lemon noted that implementation experience has led to significant changes in the proposed specification to make it more practical and less speculative.
- Florian Obser recalled that the working group had previously expressed interest in adopting this work once a stable version with updated authorship is available.
- Chris Box suggested waiting to see the updated document before initiating a formal call for adoption.
Service Registration Removal (draft-michel-dnssd-service-registration-removal)
- François Michel provided an update on the "Remove All" work. He is currently focused on gathering empirical data from a testbed with numerous devices to evaluate how the draft improves registration times in congested, constrained networks.
- François Michel expects to have results and a document update ready for the upcoming IETF 124 meeting in Vienna.
SRP Replication (draft-ietf-dnssd-srp-replication)
- Ted Lemon noted that while replication remains relevant—particularly for transitioning between servers or for CE routers—it has been "back-burnered" due to other priorities.
- Tim Wicinski suggested that the infrastructure work is currently a higher priority than replication.
- Esko Dijk questioned if infrastructure support makes replication moot. Ted Lemon argued that replication is still useful for migration and for environments where a stable infrastructure server might not be present.
- Ted Lemon also mentioned a concept of "SRP caching" using lightweight hints/hashes, which could eventually improve the efficiency of the replication protocol.
SIG(0) (draft-ietf-dnssd-sig0)
- Tim Wicinski noted that the SIG(0) draft is relevant to Service Registration Protocol (SRP) work.
- The authors (Donald Eastlake and Ray Bellis) were not present, but it was noted that Donald Eastlake recently updated the draft, indicating continued interest.
Charter Update
- Chris Box informed the group that a charter update is currently with the Area Director (Eric Vyncke) for review. Once the AD is satisfied with the text, it will be shared with the mailing list for working group input.
Decisions and Action Items
- Action Item (Ted Lemon/Esko Dijk): Resolve the SVG build issue in the TSR repository and publish a new revision of draft-ietf-dnssd-tsr.
- Action Item (Ted Lemon): Revise the infrastructure draft with new co-authors and implementation-based updates prior to a call for adoption.
- Action Item (Chris Box): Share the proposed charter update with the mailing list once initial AD review is complete.
Next Steps
- The working group will continue technical discussions on the mailing list and via GitHub PRs.
- Progress on service removal testing and infrastructure updates will be presented at the next IETF meeting.
