Summary

The IOTDIR (IoT Directorate) held its pre-meeting for IETF 116. The session focused on reminding members about the document review process, providing status updates across various IoT-related Working Groups (WGs) and Research Groups (RGs) within the IETF and IRTF, and exploring future activities, particularly around AI agent interactions with IoT environments.

IOTDIR Administration

Ines Robles reminded members of the importance of the review process. Even if a reviewer is not a domain expert, their unique perspective is valuable.
Reviewers are requested to accept or decline assignments as early as possible to allow timely reassignment and meet tight deadlines.

Working Group Updates

1. Sixlow

Carles Gomez provided the update:
- The WG will meet in Vienna.
- Two documents are with the IESG for publication:
  - draft-ietf-6low-pasa (Path-Aware Semantic Addressing for LLNs): Currently being updated based on mailing list reviews.
  - draft-ietf-6low-generic-address-assignment-option (Generic Address Assignment Option (GAU) for 6LoWPAN ND): Authors are addressing feedback from a WG participant.
- Three other WG documents in earlier stages:
  - draft-ietf-6low-schc-154 (Transmission of SCHC compressed packets over IEEE 802.15.4 networks): Being updated to address minor issues with rollover modes.
  - draft-ietf-6low-ipv6-over-owc (Transmission of IPv6 packets over short-range optical wireless communications): Active update in progress.
  - draft-ietf-6low-6overmstp (Transmission of IPv6 over Multi-drop Serial Bus Token Passing networks): Recently adopted to obsolete RFC 8163. Key discussion point is whether to support SCHC as an optional mechanism for header compression.

2. ASDF

Ari Keränen provided the update:
- The WG will meet in Vienna.
- The primary focus is finalising draft-ietf-asdf-sdf-nipsy (Non-Internet Connected Devices Gateway Specification).
- Work is ongoing on other drafts, including digital twins (draft-ietf-asdf-digital-twin) and mapping documents.

3. CBOR

Carsten Bormann provided the update:
- draft-ietf-cbor-diagnostic-notation (Extended Diagnostic Notation) completed WG Last Call (WGLC).
- Chairs are managing diverging opinions between two participants, but technically the specification is stable, and new implementations are emerging.

4. CORE

Marco Tiloca provided the update:
- Two RFCs published since March: an informational RFC on IANA registration and a Proposed Standard on DNS over CoAP (RFC 9465).
- Four documents are currently with the RFC Editor:
  - draft-ietf-core-href (Constrained Resource Identifiers)
  - draft-ietf-core-cbor-c-ranges (C-Ranges for point-holders in YANG CBOR)
  - Two group communication documents: transport (draft-ietf-core-groupcomm-bis) and security protocol (draft-ietf-core-oscore-groupcomm), clustered alongside related ACE WG documents.
- Three documents completed WGLC:
  - draft-ietf-core-coap-pubsub (CoAP PubSub) — publication request expected soon.
  - draft-ietf-core-coap-uri-path-abbrev (CoAP URI path abbreviation) — new revision expected soon.
- CORE CONF cluster:
  - Two documents completed their first WGLC; a second WGLC is planned.
  - Recently adopted draft-ietf-core-yang-cbor-metadata (representing metadata in YANG CBOR).
- Other active works: clarifications on COAPs, multicast responses, and OSCORE security items.
- Private SID translation for CORE CONF is being explored, with core work relevant to CORE and application-specific work likely routing to the SCHC WG.
- The WG will meet for a two-hour session in Vienna, with virtual interims resuming in September.

5. IoT Ops

Alexey Melnikov and Carsten Bormann provided the update:
- draft-ietf-iotops-security-protocol-comparison (Comparison of CoAP Security Protocols) was returned to the WG by the AD due to slow progress.
- draft-ietf-iotops-constrained-node-networks-terminology (Terminology for Constrained Node Networks) has a PR addressing AD comments on MTUs and "secret shielding."
- draft-ietf-iotops-dns-guidelines (IoT DNS Security and Privacy Guidelines) is active and expected to head to WGLC before Vienna.
- draft-ietf-iotops-yang-ownership-licensing (YANG Ownership and Licensing Statement): Authors are preparing an update.
- draft-ietf-iotops-security-technologies (Summary of Security Enabling Technologies for IoT Devices): Expired, but a new co-editor has been identified to revitalize the work.

6. Roll

Ines Robles provided the update:
- The WG will not meet at IETF 116, but held an interim on 17 June.
- draft-ietf-roll-enrollment-priority is currently in AD review.
- Work continues on modifications and the NSA extension (draft-ietf-roll-nsa-extension).

7. SCHC

Éric Vyncke provided the update:
- Holding interims every two weeks.
- Key focus is on draft-ietf-schc-architecture (SCHC Architecture) and draft-ietf-schc-coap (SCHC over CoAP).

8. Suit and Teep

Hannes Tschofenig provided the update:
- Many SUIT drafts are in IESG processing, with updates being made based on reviews.
- TEEP progress is largely blocked waiting for the completion of the SUIT specifications in the IESG/RFC Editor queue.

IRTF Research Group Updates

Thing-to-Thing Research Group (T2TRG)

Ari Keränen provided the update:
- Planning to meet in Vienna, focusing on "IETF IoT technologies in enabling AI agent interactions with IoT environments" (agentic IoT).
- Seeking input and coordination with other IETF WGs working on related agentic IoT concepts.
- Currently resolving a scheduling conflict with an AI agent BoF.
- draft-irtf-t2trg-ops-security-considerations (Taxonomy of Operational Security Considerations for Manufacture Installed Keys and Trust Anchors) passed RG Last Call and is moving towards publication.

Decisions and Action Items

Action Item: Members willing to review documents for the Roll WG (draft-ietf-roll-enrollment-priority and draft-ietf-roll-nsa-extension) should contact Ines Robles.
Action Item: IoT-related WGs and RGs to coordinate with T2TRG (via Ari Keränen) if they have ongoing work relevant to AI agents in IoT environments.

Next Steps

IoT WGs will convene their respective sessions during IETF 116 in Vienna.
CORE interim meetings are scheduled to resume in September.
