ANIMA
IETF 125 Session Minutes
Summary
The ANIMA Working Group met to discuss the status of core specifications, specifically progress on BRSKI variants and autonomic signaling. A major milestone was reached with draft-ietf-anima-rfc8366bis nearing completion, which will unblock several dependent documents in the RFC Editor queue. Significant discussion focused on constrained BRSKI implementations, operational considerations for MASA and Registrars, and new work surrounding intent-based autonomic service deployment and the use of GRASP for Computing-Aware Traffic Steering (CATS) metrics.
Key Discussion Points
WG Status and 8366bis
- Presenter: Toerless Eckert / Michael Richardson
- Slides: 00 Chair Slides, 02 RFC8366bis status update
- draft-ietf-anima-rfc8366bis has completed Working Group Last Call (WGLC). Version -09 addresses AD review comments from Mahesh Jethanandani, including YANG fixes and removal of BCP 14 language from within YANG groupings.
- The document is critical as it blocks a cluster of documents (C484) and draft-ietf-anima-brski-prm.
- Toerless Eckert noted the document will be sent to the IESG for final review following a post-meeting shepherd check.
Constrained BRSKI and Join Proxy
- Presenter: Esko Dijk
- Slides: 01 Constrained BRSKI and Join Proxy IETF 125
- Drafts: draft-ietf-anima-constrained-voucher, draft-ietf-anima-constrained-join-proxy
- Updates: A new URI-path abbreviation option (
abrf) is introduced for CoAP requests to the registrar. The registrar now sends the full pledge certificate chain to the MASA to support minimal MASA implementations that only store CA certificates. - Security: Michael Richardson raised the need for explicit DTLS cipher suite requirements. Toerless Eckert suggested proceeding to a Shepherd review followed by an early Security Directorate review to finalize these details.
- Join Proxy: Discussion on whether to support the
abrfoption on constrained join proxies. Esko Dijk concluded it is not worth the complexity for discovery messages.
BRSKI Operational Considerations
- Presenter: Michael Richardson
- Slides: 03 MASA/Registrar Operational Document, overview and merge ideas
- Drafts: draft-ietf-anima-masa-considerations, draft-ietf-anima-registrar-considerations
- Merge Discussion: There is an ongoing debate about merging the MASA and Registrar operational drafts. Toerless Eckert suggested keeping them separate or renaming them to "Owner Considerations" vs. "Manufacturer Considerations" to reflect different target audiences. Stefan Vallin supported merging because the two roles interact significantly during trust establishment.
BRSKI Discovery
- Presenter: Toerless Eckert
- Slides: 04 BRSKI Discovery
- Draft: draft-ietf-anima-brski-discovery
- Following a review by Stuart Cheshire, the DNS-SD encoding was updated. To comply with DNS-SD "should" requirements, variations are now encoded as comma-separated values under a single
varkey rather than separate keys, avoiding the nine-character limit issues. - IANA table formatting remains a challenge due to the 72-character width limit in RFCs.
Constrained GRASP (cGRASP)
- Presenter: Longwei Zhu
- Slides: 05 Constrained GRASP
- Draft: draft-ietf-anima-constrained-grasp
- cGRASP maps GRASP signaling onto CoAP requests/responses.
- Implementation: A "role reversal" logic was introduced to handle the CoAP client/server mismatch during long negotiations (e.g., M-WAIT). Brian Carpenter questioned if M-WAIT is strictly necessary or if larger timeouts could suffice.
- The prototype is being migrated from Brian Carpenter’s original Python implementation to a CoAP-based version.
Intent-Based Framework and Service Deployment
- Presenters: Longwei Zhu, Jialu Du
- Slides: 06 An Intent-based Framework..., 07 Autonomic Deployment Mechanism..., 07 Definition of Service Intent...
- Drafts: draft-ietf-anima-network-service-auto-deployment, draft-zhu-anima-service-intent-definition, draft-du-anima-service-intent-deployment
- Work has resumed on the auto-deployment framework, shifting focus toward "Intent-based" mechanisms.
- The proposed service intent is outcome-oriented and covers network, storage, and compute resources. Brian Carpenter provided feedback regarding the need for formal CDDL/JSON schemas.
- The deployment mechanism uses GRASP negotiations to translate high-level intent into resource reservations across autonomic nodes.
GRASP for CATS Metrics
- Presenter: Kehan Yao
- Slides: 09 GRASP Objective for CATS Metrics Distribution
- Draft: draft-yao-anima-grasp-objective-for-cats-metrics (individual submission)
- The proposal suggests using GRASP to distribute Computing-Aware Traffic Steering (CATS) metrics.
- Toerless Eckert and the CATS chairs suggested that an applicability statement should first be presented in the CATS WG. If CATS consensus favors GRASP, ANIMA will handle the protocol-specific extensions.
Decisions and Action Items
- RFC8366bis: Toerless Eckert to conduct shepherd review and move draft-ietf-anima-rfc8366bis to IESG.
- Constrained BRSKI: Authors of draft-ietf-anima-constrained-voucher to add DTLS cipher suite recommendations.
- Security Review: Toerless Eckert to request early Security Directorate review for the constrained BRSKI documents.
- Operational Drafts: Authors to decide on the merge/rename of the Registrar and MASA operational considerations drafts.
- Service Intent: Authors of the intent drafts to provide CDDL/JSON schemas in the next revision.
Next Steps
- BRSKI Discovery: Toerless Eckert to resolve IANA table formatting and finalize for publication.
- cGRASP: Prototype development to continue, focusing on multicast relay and role reversal logic.
- CATS/GRASP: Authors to coordinate with CATS WG on an applicability statement for using GRASP for metric distribution.
- Implementation Guidance: Michael Richardson to consider if implementation guidance in the operational drafts should be published as an RFC or kept as a living document/wiki.
